PRP to fight it out alone in next polls

KOVUR (NELLORE): Emboldened by the response to his Praja Ankita Sabha

meetings in various parts of the state, Chiranjeevi has asserted that
his Prajarajyam
Party would go it alone in the coming elections as the party has `gained' enough confidence in the hearts of the public.

The PRP chief said though the TRS has not come forward for an alliance, the party is ready to face the ballot. "The people have reposed faith and high confidence on us. We don't have to depend on others and wait for alliances," he said.

Talking to newspersons here on Tuesday, Chiranjeevi said he is confident that the PRP would reap a rich haul in Telangana region despite TRS' presence. He however acknowledged that they would face some difficulty if a common party symbol was not allotted by the Election Commission of India.

The PRP chief said his government would take constructive measures to curb corrupt practices in the administration. "We have carefully considered and announced the Rs 100 package for the have-nots in the state. We will plan more welfare measures to support the people under below poverty line," he said.

The actor-turned-politician said his government would ban the belt shops and take back excess lands allotted for Special Economic Zones in the state. Lambasting the YSR government for failing to check the rising prices of essential commodities, he pooh-poohed the CM's welfare agenda for the poor.

Chiranjeevi alleged that some parties have deputed `coverts' to keep tabs and get information from his party. The PRP chief, on the third day of his tour to the district, received huge turnout of public at Kovur, Buchireddypalem, Sangam and Athmakur mandals. He would start his tour in Prakasam district on Wednesday.

PRP, BJP move HC over ban

HYDERABAD: The Prajarajyam party and BJP on Monday filed separate writ petitions

in the AP High Court seeking suspension of the circular
memorandum of the DGP,
which imposed a blanket ban on political roadshows in the state.

PRP general secretary Allu Arvind and BJP floor leader G Kishan Reddy moved the vacation court with a plea that this `unlawful' memo was disabling them from addressing the citizens of the state at a time when the state was heading towards elections in the next two months. They claimed that the DGP had no legal competence to issue the circular as he had no power, authority or jurisdiction to do so.

Defending the concept of roadshows, the petitioners said this was introduced only to lessen the inconvenience of the people. This was the reverse process of a stationed public meeting to bring the leader to the masses and not vice versa, they said.

When there is no prohibition on padayatra (the one that the present chief minister YSR undertook in 2004) or `Chalo Assembly' __ which are also associated with participation of respective supporters in crew __ there cannot be any different treatment to a roadshow, they said.

Though the DGP's circular talks about notifying certain roads where limited convoys of leaders are allowed, the leaders said in their petition that the police authorities were registering cases against political leaders even before notifying such roads.

A circular cannot override the existing statutes and it cannot supplant the law, they said. Though this circular has not come from the legislature, it has already taken the shape and the colour of a law, they said.

The petitioners also wanted the court to declare the Police Act, 1861 as unconstitutional because it has no legislative sanction in view of certain provisions of the seventh schedule of the constitution.

Don't be hasty, Cong tells KCR

HYDERABAD: Alarmed over the possible alliance between the Telugu Desam Party

and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), several Congress
leaders are sending an
SOS to the high command to change its stance on Telangana or be prepared for an electoral rout in the region.

Highly-placed Congress sources told TOI that TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has been told not to take any hasty decision on the issue of poll alliance and not to go either with TDP or the Prajarajyam Party. The leaders were of the view that it was still not too late for the Congress and TRS to forge an alliance as they did in 2004.

The Congress leaders from the state are urging KCR not to join hands either with TDP or PRP while convincing the high command to take a positive stance on Telangana. The leaders include Union urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy, PCC president D Srinivas, and V Hanumantha Rao, former chief minister N Janardhan Reddy, Chinta Mohan, K Harsha Kumar and Kishore Chandra Deo.

Known for their anti-YSR stance, these leaders are said to be convincing the Congress high command to ensure that TRS does not join hands with TDP. "The doors of the Congress are always open for TRS," PCC president D Srinivas said in Nizamabad on Tuesday, in a clear message to KCR to hold his horses.

Meanwhile, TRS sources claimed they are in direct touch with the Congress high command on the issue of forging an alliance. "Our only goal is Telangana. And our first choice as an electoral ally is the Congress. The moment it announces a pro-Telangana policy, we would have no hesitation in sailing with it. TDP is the last resort," claimed a TRS leader close to KCR.

But TRS claims notwithstanding, the Congress high command seems to be the least interested in taking the Telangana issue seriously. Till date, it has not said anything except parroting what Rajasekhara Reddy has been saying on the separate state issue. That it is not against Telangana and that a decision on it would be taken at an appropriate time.

In fact, AICC general secretary in charge of the state M Veerappa Moily had gone out of his way to state that the Congress would not take a stance on Telangana until the coming elections were over. The pro-Telangana leaders from the state have only AICC leaders like P J Kurien to convey to the high command their desperate message that the party is doomed in Telangana if it does not recognise the separate state demand.

With KCR having said that he would announce his decision after Sankranti, it remains to be seen whether the stubborn Congress high command would budge before that on the separate state issue.

KCR, meanwhile, is keeping up the pressure on the Congress to take a decision in favour of Telangana as soon as possible. "If they (Congress) don't, then the TRS-TDP alliance will ensure that the Congress does not get more than five seats of the 119 in Telangana," the TRS president said at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday.

kala-venkatrao-into-praja-rajyam-party

TDP Deputy Leader in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, Kimidi Kala Venkatrao, will join PRP (Praja Rajyam party) after resigning from TDP due to his differences with K. Yerranaidu. Kala is the second Deputy Leader to quit Telugu Desam Party in the last 1 year. Former Deputy Leader T. Devender Goud quit TDP and formed a new party, Nava Telangana Praja Party (NTPP), which formed an alliance with PRP. Efforts by TDP senior leaders to stop his resignation failed as Party is still relying more on his opponent Yerranaidu.

Kala Venkatrao is representing Vunukur Assembly constituency in Srikakulam district which was disappeared in the de-limitation process. He wanted to contest from either Etcherla Assembly or Vizianagaram Loksabha constituencies. TDP failed to give him an assurance which hastened his decision. TDP will be in trouble in Srikakulam district due to the exit of Kala Venkatrao who is one of the senior most leaders in the Party and can wield influence in at least 5 Assembly constituencies.

Kala will be invited by PRP President Chiranjeevi through video conference and will officially join PRP at a later date in Hyderabad. Kala is the second senior leader after Thammineni Veerabhadram to quit Telugu Desam Party from Srikakulam district to join Praja Rajyam Party. Srikakulam is the the bastion of TDP during NTR days and is traditionally an Anti-Congress district. NTR even contested from Tekkali in Srikakulam district in 1994. There are still people in that district who blindly vote for Cycle symbol- that is the influence of NTR in this BC-dominated district. We will see triangular contests in most of the Assembly segments in Srikakulam district. According to a survey by Indian Express, PRP and Congress are ahead in this district.

TDP President Chandrababu Naidu should be careful in selecting next Assembly Deputy Leader.
